Treatment Dynamics Delivers Deeper Insights for Pharmaceutical Companies

Medaffcon’s new Treatment Dynamics service gives pharmaceutical companies deeper insights into patient journeys, treatment progression, medication use and market dynamics through tailored patient-level real-world data analysis.

Conversations with clients about Medaffcon’s new Treatment Dynamics service have confirmed a clear need for this type of solution in the pharmaceutical industry.

“Treatment Dynamics enables us to provide clients with more precise, tailored answers to questions across business functions, marketing, sales, market access and research,” says Timo Karvinen, Market Access Manager at Medaffcon.

Treatment Dynamics is part of Medaffcon’s broader ARWI approach to accelerated real-world insights. According to Mariann Lassenius, RWE Lead at Medaffcon, the service draws on patient-level data made available by Kela for statistical purposes. This allows Medaffcon to tailor the analysis to a wide range of business needs.

Patient-Level Data Provides More Precise Answers

Treatment Dynamics draws on four Kela datasets: prescription data from Kanta, medication dispensing data, diagnosis and episode data, and data on reimbursable medicinal products.

The key difference compared with previous solutions is the availability of patient-level data.

“Access to longitudinal patient-level data enables us to conduct a much broader range of analyses. Even we have been surprised by the breadth of insights that can be generated from the data,” Karvinen says.

Speed is another important advantage. Because the data is already available to Medaffcon, the team can begin addressing clients’ questions without a lengthy data acquisition process. The data is also updated quarterly, allowing changes to be monitored over time.

From Treatment Lines to Patient Behaviour

One area that clients have wanted to examine in greater detail is treatment-line positioning. Previous analyses relied on aggregated data and were largely limited to treatment initiation and subsequent switching. The patient-level data now available makes it possible to follow patients across multiple treatment lines.

“We can track individual patient journeys over an extended period and analyse as many treatment lines as needed,” Karvinen explains.

Treatment Dynamics can be used to examine treatment progression, treatment duration and persistence, medication dosing, adherence and treatment interruptions.

The data also enables the analysis of comorbidities, concomitant medications, and the specialties and healthcare units generating prescriptions. At the regional level, analyses can examine areas such as new patient numbers, treatment duration and changes in patient populations. Medaffcon is continuing to develop the dataset to enable more granular analysis of regional differences.

A Resource for the Entire Organisation

Treatment Dynamics supports a wide range of functions within pharmaceutical companies. For market access teams, it can provide insights into medication dosing and its impact on costs. For research teams, the data can serve as a starting point for analyses and subsequent research projects.

The service also provides valuable insights for business and commercial teams.

“Brand, marketing and sales teams often ask similar questions. In which treatment lines are different medicines used? Where is our product positioned in the market? How long do patients remain on treatment?” Karvinen says.

The data can also be used to examine patient numbers, treatment duration and comorbidities.

“Insights like these can support meaningful discussions with physicians about how a medicine is used and the factors that influence its use,” Lassenius says.

The Value of Data Comes from Expert Interpretation

Treatment Dynamics is built on high-quality data, but its greatest value comes from expert analysis and interpretation. Medaffcon combines data expertise with an in-depth understanding of pharmaceutical markets and clients’ business needs.

“We understand both what the data can reveal and how clients can apply the resulting insights in their decision-making,” Karvinen says.

Rather than simply delivering a report, Medaffcon takes a consultative approach and reviews the findings together with the client. This helps explain the practical implications of the results and translate them into actionable recommendations.
