Medaffcon has extensive experience in preparing renewal applications for price and reimbursement decisions. We handle 25–30 renewal applications each year, giving our clients strong expertise and a comprehensive view of the process end to end.
Price and reimbursement decisions for outpatient medicines are always time-limited, which means reimbursement must be renewed at set intervals. Renewal applications must be submitted to the Pharmaceuticals Pricing Board (Hila), for example every 1–5 years. Finding time for renewal applications can be challenging, as pharmaceutical companies typically prefer to focus their resources on product launches.
“At the same time, companies are dealing with an increasing number of internal processes and projects, which leaves less time for preparing renewal applications,” says Simo Jääskeläinen, Market Access Lead at Medaffcon.
Because individual companies only prepare renewal applications occasionally, it can be difficult to build routine and maintain in-house expertise.
Medaffcon, by contrast, has long-standing, hands-on experience in renewal applications. We have been preparing them since 2011.
“Renewal applications are easy to outsource to a service provider. We have strong expertise in preparing these submissions, and we also review each case from a tactical perspective. We identify the most suitable approach, anticipate what may happen during the process, and advise on how best to structure the application,” Jääskeläinen explains.
Medaffcon prepares around 25–30 renewal applications each year for approximately 10–15 clients. This volume ensures well-established routines and consistently high quality.

Simo started as the leader of Medaffcon’s Market Access team in November 2024. He is a returnee, as he has also previously worked at Medaffcon. Before returning to Medaffcon, Simo worked in a pharmaceutical company as the head of a Market Access team and has also gained Market Access experience in other pharmaceutical companies. He has over 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Simo holds a Master’s degree in Health Sciences and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
Simo brings to Medaffcon a strong and versatile background in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in Market Access roles. His strengths include versatility, organizational skills, and the ability to see the bigger picture. In the field of Market Access, Simo does not consider himself an expert in any particular subfield but sees himself as a generalist. He is drawn to the challenges of the industry and the opportunity to find comprehensive solutions that meet the needs of clients.
Ongoing changes in the operating environment require pharmaceutical companies to adapt and adopt new ways of working. Simo believes that the role and importance of Market Access will become even more prominent in a situation where society’s willingness to pay and the needs of the pharmaceutical industry must be aligned in a way that benefits both parties.
